Sepia Saturday 85 - MG Magnette Mark III

Inspired by Alan's great photo in this week's Sepia Saturday, I turned to my vintage magazines collection to help me out. I wasn't quite sure what I was looking for as I flipped through the March 1959 edition of Motor Sport magazine, probably something classic with bumpers, when I came across this. It's an advertisement of an MG Magnette Mark III, and one of the reasons for posting this was that I had never heard of it before. A quick bit of research revealed that it was received to mixed reviews, so I'm assuming not many were made. On reading the description of the car, it claims to be 'freshly styled from bumper to bumper', so met my posting criteria on that count also.

  1. I didn't know MG made anything other than little sports cars.

  2. It’s very sleek! I was once allowed to drive an MG Midget - a few hundred yards - by a friend, which is the nearest I’ve ever come to anything MG.

  3. I'm with Postcardy. I never knew of any cars other than the Midget which in the US had quite a reputation as a suicide car. It was so small it wasn't seen and often hit.

  4. The date did it for me...I was 18 then! lol

  5. I vaguely remember that car. Look at the price £714.0.0 and £388.7.0 Purchase Tax.

  6. Freshly styled? Its just a rebadged Farina designed Austin Cambridge / Morris Oxford. The ZA and ZB Magnettes of the 1950s were the real deal. Lovely old advert though.

  7. I don't remember any MG Magnette either, just the Midget and the Sprite.

  8. Strangely enough, I do seem to remember this particular car. I was 11 at the time and it was just the age I started taking an interest in cars and cutting out pictures of new cars from magazines. It was a kind of "Top Gear" phase I was going through - and it soon passed.

  9. I hadn't heard of it either, but it's not a bad-looking car.
