As Alan shared a picture of a plane for this week's Sepia Saturday, I thought I'd have a look through my magazines for something appropriate. Strangely the Royal Air Force, Air Mail magazines do not have many pictures of planes in them, however I can across this fantastic advert issued by the Brewer's Society.
Beer, It's Lovely !
The full text of the advert reads ...
Beer and bowls
Our local has its own bowling green. Take it from me, you need your pint after you've had a hard game. People who've never played think it's easy, but it takes a lot of skill ... and a good bit of nerve too.
When you're relaxing -
BEER, IT'S LOVELY !
And who am I to argue with that fine sentiment.
More vintage magazines and vintage postcards on my web site
Much more interesting than a boring old aeroplane :)
ReplyDeleteI think that slogan would work very well today. It's unusual and offbeat - and fun to say for some reason. I can imagine the advertising campaign already, with big strong men, old grannies, socialites etc. proclaiming beer is lovely.
ReplyDeleteI agree with that slogan.
ReplyDeleteMakes me want a beer and I don't even like beer.
ReplyDeleteI don't ever recall thinking of beer as "lovely." Having said that, I can recall -- dimly -- more than one occasion when I'd drunk enough beer to make some young lady appear lovely, to my later regret.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I think it is rather odd that "the Royal Air Force, Air Mail magazines do not have many pictures of planes in them."
I'm thinking these fellows probably got more exercise at the pub lifting a few than they did on the bowling green.
ReplyDeleteI'd probably bowl more accurately, after a pint.
ReplyDeleteYou've made me thirsty!
ReplyDeleteI'll have the beer and just watch the bowls please. I find these old ads fascinating :-) Jo
ReplyDelete...and beer always improves one's skills! :)
ReplyDeleteI just hope they do not try crown green bowling after a pint or two. At least they could get a pint in those days not these litre thingies,
ReplyDeleteGood thing I wasn't writing copy. It would have read, "Beer -- It's yucky!"
ReplyDeleteThe copy might have been written by Homer Simpson. Beer and Bowls, Mmmmmmmm
ReplyDeleteI was thinking of something good and cold...sounds delightful!
ReplyDeleteI have only ever played bowls once and I found it fairly exhausting and therefore a pint (or two) afterwards sounds like a sound idea.
ReplyDeleteBeer is lovely! I had a few yesterday...
ReplyDeleteI don't see many beer ads these days. Why is that? Interesting choice to combine bowls and beer....
