Sepia Saturday 60: vintage photography booklets

I'm keeping on theme this week for my Sepia Saturday post and sharing some images relating to photography. Below are a handful of Focal Photo Guide booklets I picked up a few months ago. Not sure of the age but would guess early 1960's. The black and white covers with the red borders remind me of books I had as a child, which I'm guessing I must have inherited, where colour was used sparingly.

  2. I'm struggling with this week's theme. I was expecting you to post some more old Picturegoers; this is even better

  6. Do you think 60s? I would think 50s or maybe even 40s........

  7. There has been already a love of photography and the want to improve the Technic.

  8. I am intrigued that others have followed the "camera" theme this week too, rather than the more obvious "star" theme. Thanks for sharing these evocative magazine covers - most appropriate.

  9. These are great front covers - maybe the magazines should go back to this simple but effective style of cover.

  10. I vote for 1955-59. My dad, who is a amateur photographer and camera collector/hoarder, probably still had the originals until I cleaned the attic last year. Splendid techno ephemera.

  13. These have great style, and they're from an era when it really took a lot of skill to take a great photo.

  14. They so liked using those colors a lot back then! The little girl's expression (in the first photo) is my favorite of them all! Amazing how far we've gone since those days!

  18. I think I had some of those that I got from my grandfather. I was born in 68, and probably got them around 76 when I was into taking pictures for about a minute. :-)

  20. Definitely 1950s or early 1960s as I can remember own several in the series including the one on darkroom gadgets. The very images brought memories flooding back.

  21. I'm still amazed that there's no copyright date on these things. (I KNOW you're familiar enough with books and magazines to know where to look, haha!) A quick internet search -- which mostly brings up eBay listings -- mentions 1950s, except for one reference to 1948.
