Sepia Saturday 62: Norma Shearer, vintage Picturegoer magazine, c.1941

For my Sepia Saturday blog entry this week I've decided to go with the Picturegoer magazine again. The issue featured this week is from October 1941, and features a cover shot of the Canadian actress Norma Shearer and the usual great advertisements on the back. The 'Girls Who Cause Anxiety' headline is interesting and is about anaemia ... a headline like that in one of today's papers would be about something very different.

  1. To begin with I muddled up Norma with Moira Shearer of 'Red Shoes' fame. I remember the Gibbs Dentifrice shown in the advert on the back of the magazine from later than 1941 (when I was only 4!)

  2. How strange : I have gone for a couple of British bright young things as well : but from 10 years and 60 years before yours. I do share your love of old magazines : endless source of fascination.

  3. Great entry this week. I can remember collecting movie star magazines when I was a teen and swapping pictures with my friends. LOL how silly we were. Just plain teen fun. Nothing like today for sure.

  4. Oh yes it does not sound complimentary to be a girl caugsing anxiety! I say though better to cause that to receive in that case! Lovely post again; love the old magazines. Wish I'd saved some of my Movie magazines from my teen years.

  6. There is something sincere about old pictures, still without life, this may be just poetry, but I feel it so

  9. Interesting duotone. Entire interior printed in the dark green so they'd have it to use for the cover. Were all issues of this magazine printed like this or did they occasionally change inks?

  10. @Tattered and Lost - most of the covers have a similar 'duotone' but different coloured inks - I'll try and get some more posted later this week.
