Sepia Saturday 101 - over the hiils and fast away

Taking the car as the theme for this week's Sepia Saturday, I've rummaged through my vintage Motor Sport magazines and found this advertisement from the April 1959 edition. The advert is for the Austin Healey, with a backdrop of 4 tweed-suited, landed gentry, no doubt off for a jolly good time, probably involving a picnic rug and matching hamper, and using words and phrases like "rotter", "dash it all" and "come on ginger, don't be such a bad egg".

  1. Great magazine! Reminds me of my time as the 7/16ths socket man for my Dad as he restored classic British sportscars. Always drolled over the 1950 Jag but even back then, it was way out of my price range!

  2. I'd forgotten about the Austin Healey. Never knew anyone that owned one, but did have a friend who had a dreadful Austin Marina in the 1970s. What a rickety little car it was.

  3. We would settle for that purchase price today.

@Tattered and Lost - your Marina must have been better than a work's Allegro that I was saddled with for a while.

  5. Great car - you hardly ever see one these days except at car shows. My post also shows and old car and a tweedy person :-) Jo

  6. An Austin Healey...ah yes, I'd be jumping up and down with joy at the sight of two of those two. A friend of mine had one of these years ago. He used to tie tin cans to the underside so that he's hear it if someone tried to roll it away.

  7. A few of them were imported to the US, and I can remember sitting in one once. I really miss small cars.

  8. A car like that evokes an entire world, doesn't it? The ad is perfect.

  9. What a wonderful ad, love the wording. I also love
your words - "rotter", "dash it all" and "come on ginger, don't be such a bad egg".

  10. Almost brings me to sing the holiday song, "over the river and thru the woods to grandmother's house we go..." A very nice ad for an auto unfamiliar to me. I see few were imported to US...

  11. They were wonderful cars : I remember those wonderful bug-eyes so well. They date from a time when I was just entering my teens and I was in love with cars with all the enthusiasm of a modern petrol-head.
